Installing Ubuntu Server on VMware

It was the first time I've ever run VMware workstation (v.7.1.4) on my windows 7 (Ultimate 64bit) machine.
First, grab the latest copy of Ubuntu server (32bit). Even though you have a 64bit system, the VMware only runs at 32bit.

Fire up VMware and create a "New Virtual Machine"

I've picked the typical installation option to avoid any problems during the installation and chose to install from an iso file.

Browse and pick the downloaded Ubuntu server iso file

The window should say Ubuntu server (11.04 at the time of writing) detected.

Fill in your name and pick a username+password

So you can log into the freshly to be installed Ubuntu server.

Enter a nice name for your to be created Virtual machine and allocate the diskspace you wish to use

I set mine to 50GB.
In the next screen you can customize your hardware.

Changed the "Network Adapter" settings to bridged mode

This allows the Ubuntu server to have his own IP address, so we can access it from outside as if it were a separate machine.
That's all. Sit back and relax!

VMware is a great piece of software. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to increase the screen resolution of the virtual machine.
But then again, it doesn't really matter. Since I only access the virtual machine with Putty.

I'm running this on the following hardware:
- Intel Core i7 920 (2.67GHz)
- 6,00 GB DDR3 memory
- 2x NVIDIA gtx260 SLI connected
- 2 TB hdd

Next we'll setup the shell access for our Ubuntu server
